Genki Japanese School is a study abroad school for foreigners who want to learn Japanese in Japan. We have locations in Fukuoka City, in southern Japan, and in Tokyo. We specialize in teaching communicative Japanese, and unlike most Japanese language schools, our courses are aimed at speakers of non-kanji languages (mainly, European languages). You can start any Monday throughout the year, and study for as many weeks as you like. We're the most flexible, fun and rewarding Japanese school in Japan!

GenkiJACS first opened its doors to our awesome customers in Fukuoka in 2004. At that time, there were very few Japanese language schools that catered to the needs of Western and other students who study Japanese as a hobby or for daily life, rather than to enter a Japanese university, and almost none outside of Tokyo. Our first director, Rie Kirby, had worked at a few different Japanese schools, but found all of them lacking in some way - too big classes, lack of flexibility, focusing on the teacher instead of the student, etc. In response, GenkiJACS was modeled after the kind of language schools that are common in Europe, meaning very flexible to client needs, offering a variety of fun courses, and with small group classes. All these were quite new concepts in Japan, and GenkiJACS proved to be extremely popular. The basic formula for GenkiJACS hasn't changed much since then, except for a few tweaks to help us serve our students better. We hope you'll experience the GenkiJACS difference one day soon!
The word "genki" is one of our favorite Japanese words. It means something like "energetic" or "healthy" in English, but there's something to it that just can't be fully translated. Japanese people use it many times each day, asking 元気ですか？ ("genki desu ka?") to mean "How are you?". It's so indispensable that it soon enters the vocabulary of almost everybody who comes to Japan. and you’ll often hear foreigners asking each other, “Genki today?” For such a simple word, its meaning is surprisingly complex. and symbolizes some of the uniqueness of Japan. It’s an attitude as much as a feeling, and at GenkiJACS, we’re proud to strive to be genki both inside and outside of the classroom!
"JACS" is short for "Japanese and Culture School". We chose this name to signify the dual focus of our school. We don't think just being a Japanese school is enough - students have to learn the culture at the same time, to be able to truly understand and use the language.
