Learning Japanese through manga: Mangajin is online!

Mangajin issue 1
We've been meaning to post this for a while, but the full set of Mangajin Japanese study magazines is available online for free! Mangajin was a magazine that focused on teaching Japanese using popular and not-so-popular manga, along with their English translations. The magazines were great tools for study - interesting content, well written, and a wealth of material. The magazine ran during the 1990s, so some of it is a bit dated now, but it's still definitely worth a read if your interests run to manga!
An index of all 30 issues of Mangajin is available here.

New York Times profile on Fukuoka

A great profile in the New York Times of the charms of Fukuoka City.
Glad other people are starting to learn about how wonderful this city is too!
Here are a couple of choice quotes:
"Fukuoka has chic boutiques, laid-back bars, a fantastic high-and-low dining scene and beaches nearby."
"Fukuoka has long had a reputation among the Japanese as a great place to live."

I hope we'll see you in Fukuoka soon!

We helped some students get dressed up in traditional Japanese 浴衣 (yukata, summer kimono) to go the fireworks show at 大濠公園 (Oohori Kouen, Ohori Park).

Don't they look great?
And here are some of the boys:

The fireworks show at Ohori is an amazing one - if you missed it this year, make sure you don't next year!

Students relaxing after Japanese class

One of the great benefits of Genki Japanese School's location in central Fukuoka is that there are so many restaurants and cafes around. In fact, there are three restaurants in the same building as GenkiJACS!
We caught students recently sharing an after-class drink at the cafe right under our Japanese school, びーどろ (Biidoro).

It's great to have a place so conveniently located, and Biidoro is also a lovely cafe - the 日替り定食 (higawari teishoku, daily special) is great value. We hope to have a drink with you there too!

Genki Japanese School shortlisted as one of world's star language schools again

STM Star Award 2012

Great news! GenkiJACS has been shortlisted as one of the world's Star Language Schools (not just Japanese language schools) by Study Travel Magazine for the fourth year in a row! We're incredibly proud of this honor, and four years in a row is an amazing accomplishment for us. Japanese language schools are under-represented compared to languages such as Spanish, so the recognition is wonderful, and we hope it'll lead to more visibility for Japanese language schools. The awards ceremony is at the start of September in London - wish us luck!
