Stephen Earnhardt, a former student at Genki Japanese school, recently premiered his stage adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s ねじまき鳥クロニクル (Nejimaki Tori Kuronikuru, the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) to rave reviews at the Edinburgh International Festival. The Economist says it was “wondrous and poignantly memorable”.
Stephen has been working on this play for many years, and the original book has often been called unadaptable, but by all accounts he’s done an amazing job. We hope he’ll bring it to Fukuoka one day, but until he does, if anyone has a chance to see it in the UK, we unreservedly recommend it!
