I’m a 60 year old retired male US citizen. I’m very interested in studying Japanese language and culture. I came across a reference to this school. Your programs include private housing somewhere in the Tokyo prefecture? I imagine some foreigners are interested in a quick crash course, but I would be interested in doing something a little more paced and I’d prefer to be there long enough that I’m at least passably proficient.
This would seem to require more than a 90-day tourist visa. I assume I would need to obtain a student visa for such a stay? I wouldn’t mind staying in Japan for longer to visit other parts of the country, but I don’t have much interest in getting a job there for a longer duration visa. Would I need to obtain a student visa for the study part of my stay, then return to the states and come back under a 90-day tourist visa? Or is there a way to stretch my stay without the return trip? The cost of the flights isn’t the problem – I just hate flying, especially long trips. I suppose I could exit the country to a nearby nation and then return as a tourist…?
Dear Joel-san, thank you for your message! As a Us citizen you can enter first for 90 days to Japan and just right before the end of those 90 days have a weekend travel to South Korea or Taiwan for example and reenter the country to get another 90 days. No need to go back to the US. The important thing is to not overstay more than 90 days each time and within a year you cannot do this and stay more than 180 days. Regarding the courses, all our courses are intensive in classes of maximum 8 students per class, 4 classes a day Monday to Friday and it is not slow paced. We also focus on communicative Japanese so conversation and listening practice have a heavy weight in our curriculum.
Would that be alright with you?
Regarding housing, yes we have private housing within the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Private apartments are in average between 40 min and 1 hour away from the school by public transportation (door to door).
I hope this helps!

Would it be possible to take a course without accommodations?
And what would be the cost of that?
Dear Yuval-san,
Thank you for your comment!
If you are not a minor it is completely fine to arrange your own accommodation as it is not compulsory.
In that case if for example you want to take 4 weeks of our Standard Japanese (20 lessons per week, 4 a day Monday to Friday in classes of maximum 8 students), it would cost 144,000 yen (registration and all materials already included).
